New York Times Story Portrait

An interactive extension of the “Independent Journalism for an Independent Life” campaign that invited NYT subscribers to create their own portraits through the stories they’ve read. A huge success for the client, and the first interactive project that Droga5 completed with the New York Times.

Winner of 2023 One Show awards for “Data Visualization” and “Use of Technology”

Shortlisted 2023 D&AD for Digital “User Participation”

  • The entire experience is user-first, and representative of who they are. At the heart of the idea, we wanted to give people a chance to represent themselves in a new way

  • Each background is generated to properly represent the user’s experience with the stories they’ve read.

  • In order to ensure enough people could access the experience, we used a M/L model to shorten problematic headlines to a reasonable length

  • In order to properly match the campaign, and maintain the diversity in type, we built a custom model that optimized based on 200 simulated iterations

  • In order to adhere to client’s privacy restrictions, everything was built to live inside their walls, which was no easy feat!
